This is about adjusting thinking when new information doesn’t fit what you already know. When a child can’t fit new information into an existing idea or category, they change that idea or create a new category so the new information can belong somewhere. This adjustment is called accommodation.

For example, a child may think all four-legged animals are dogs. If they encounter a cat and realize it’s a four-legged animal but not a dog, they revise their thinking to create separate categories, such as “dogs” and “cats.” This helps the child understand and organize new experiences more accurately.

This is the opposite of assimilation, which would try to fit the new cat into the dog category without changing the dog idea. Accommodation thus reflects how thinking becomes more flexible and organized as children learn from new situations.
